High niftiness: Self-Titled reposts all of its 2011 “Needle Exchange” guest mixes from the likes of MINKS, Stellar OM Source, Forma, Demdike Stare, Peaking Lights, and this Trish Keenan tribute set from the boys of Beige.
You’re never fully coiffed without a saxophone.
A new track titled No Face by Karin Dreijer Andersson, which you know from The Knife and Fever Ray, is featured on the We Are The Works In Progress compilation. The song was initially written for the Ingmar Bergman play The Wolf Hour, of which the soundtrack was entirely written by Karin - hope we get to hear that soundtrack one day.
With just a minimum of instruments and a focus on the opera-like vocals, No Face reminds me of the music of Klaus Nomi and Tomorrow, In A Year, the opera The Knife wrote music for last year, along with Planningtorock and Mt. Sims.
We Are The Works In Progress is a 14-song benefit album to support Japan and it’s ongoing efforts to heal post-tsunami and was compiled and organized by Blonde Redhead. It will be available digitally on January 10th and the double LP can be pre-order on their website.
If there’s one thing the last 10 years of music have taught me, it’s that people just hate clipped up soul samples and hip-hop instrumentals with beats that sound like they’re slogging through warm mud. Just kidding. It’s like the bacon of music. Hence: I’ve really been digging this “Llove Is…” EP from Paul Zigfrist. You can nab it for free right here.
Lust for Lists: My top 10 poetry books of 2011 →
Did I read 10 books of poetry this year? I did. A lot more than that actually. So much. Sometimes it hurt, but often it was lovely. More reviews to come in 2012 — especially excited for a pair of Eileen Myles titles due from Wave.
So, one of the things I do when I’m not working, grilling things, or watching Evan play Zelda is DJ big parties for bears. Big gay friendly bears — and cubs, and otters. (This is something I do not want to teach you about here if you do not know about it already. Suffice it to say: I DJ now and then. More or less monthly.)
As such, and since (((GROUP HUG))) snagged a sweet little Best Gay Night nod from the good ol’ Boston Phoenix (where I once music-edited) and has since become something of a thing, I’ve gone and given it its very own Tumblr, which you should follow if you want free (important: sporadic) mixes and photos from our monthly shindigs.
